GLASS CLASSES ~ UPPER SECTION ENCAUSTICS & COLLAGE ~ LOWER SECTION (SCROLL DWN) GLASS BEADMAKING WORKSHOPS & CLASSES: Beadmaking I Workshop One Class, 4 Hours Have fun working with soft glass in a relaxed atmosphere as you are introduced to the beginning techniques of glass beadmaking on a bench mounted torch. We will cover the basics of torch safety and how to prep mandrels, create simple bead shapes, pull stringer, and apply simple surface decorations (dots, and stacked dots). Beads will be kiln annealed and ready for pickup the following week. All materials, tools, glass, and safety equipment provided. Wear 100% cotton clothing, no baggy sleeves. Cost per student is $75 Beadmaking II Workshop One Class, 4 Hours In this class students will be introduced to slightly more complex techniques & shapes including the making of simple latticino canes, as well as using stringer & tools to distort bead surfaces (swirling, pinching, masking, etc) and create more intriguing surface designs. Beads will be kiln annealed and ready for pickup the following day/week. All materials, tools, glass, and equipment provided. Wear 100% cotton clothing, no baggy sleeves. Cost per student is $75 Beadmaking III Workshop One Class, 4 Hours This class will cover more complex bead surface techniques including how to make & use filigrano and ribbon cane. Depending on the pace of the class, we will also cover how to rake & feather, make encased floral designs, and use reduction frits, silver foil & wire. All specialty materials, glass, tools, and equipment provided. Wear 100% cotton clothing, no baggy sleeves. Solid base in Beginning Beadmaking experience is required for new student; students are welcome to take this class multiple times. Cost per student is $85 Beginning Beadmaking Class Series 4 classes, 4 hours each Dive into the world of glass beadmaking with four weeks of classes designed to teach you the basics of manipulating hot glass on a bench mounted torch. Class will teach the beginning techniques of using steel mandrels and rods of colored moretti glass to create basic bead shapes, dots & bubbles, simple twisted stringers, and surface embellishment along with the basics of kiln annealing, bead cleanup, and proper equipment use. All materials, tools, glass, and safety equipment provided. Wear 100% cotton clothing, no baggy sleeves. Cost per student is $240 Continuing Beadmaking Class Series 4 classes, 4 hours each Students in this class will continue to build on their soft glass beadmaking skills. We will explore more complex dot & stringer patterns, along with the use of reduction frits, precious metal leaf, adventurine ribbon, and fine silver wire to produce interesting organic surface effects. We will also cover the making and use of specialty stringers from cased colors, multi-color lattacinos, and ribbed canes, to build up detailed botanicals or create depth with layered elements when encased in transparent colors. All beads will be kiln annealed. All specialty materials, tools, glass, and safety equipment provided. Wear 100% cotton clothing, no baggy sleeves. The Studio rate also includes standard kiln annealing and use of all tools & safety glasses, BUT IT DOES NOT allow for production work. 3) Specialty materials are NOT included (dichros, precious metals & wires, specialty frits, coatings, specialty knob inserts etc). Jewelry Making Workshop (great add on!) One Class, 3 Hours Spend a couple of enjoyable hours with friends learning to make a fashionable toggle clasp bracelet using beautiful glass accessory beads and gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry findings and wire. Participants will also learn to manipulate wire to create a few wire-wrapped beads OR charm dangles, and other specialty features for their jewelry. Class includes all the glass & metal beads, chain, wire, and jewelry findings needed for the project. Instructor will supply safety equipment, beads, findings, & jewelry tools, but please bring your own reading glasses if needed. No experience necessary. Cost per student is $75
| FLAMEWORKING WORKSHOPS & CLASSES: Intro to Flameworking Workshop One Class, 4 Hours Ever wanted to try your hand at flameworking? This workshop is the perfect setting to explore glass in a friendly environment. Students will be introduced to the basic techniques of working clear borosilicate glass rod on a bench mounted torch to create unique stir rods & free forms featuring twisty shapes and swirls. The class will also give you a little taste of color that hopefully will inspire you to want more time playing with glass & flame! Glass work will be kiln annealed and ready for pickup the following day/week. All materials, tools, glass, and safety equipment provided. Wear 100% cotton clothing, no baggy sleeves. Students in this class will learn a sequential array of beginning flameworking techniques using clear boro rod, designed to help you gain competency with manipulating molten glass AND your torch flame. The instructor will also cover the "italian method", along with the use of a wide range of tools, kiln annealing. and studio safety & setup. Cost per student is $240 Beginning II Flameworking Class Series Four Classes, 4 Hours each Now that you have some basic experience and torch time with borosilicate glass, you are ready to push your technical skills with a bit more challenging assignments. Students will continue working with clear glass rod and be introduced to some basic tubing techniques, multiple annealings, and "bridging", with the goal of learning to assemble small scale sculptural pieces from components. You will also learn the beginnings of working with boro colors to create simple twisted latticinos and encased cane, to allow you to begin incorparating basic surface designs into your artwork. Flameworking & Fusing Fussion! One Class, 4 hour class Learn to use a bench mounted torch to add flameworked elements to your fused glass projects. You will learn to pull stingers and create simple latticino and striped canes, as well as use & design custom dichroic fused canes that can be flameworked. We will also cover how to create squiggles and swirls using these various types of cane to add fluid design elements to your creative stash of fusing and casting ideas! All work will be kiln annealed and ready for pickup later in the week. Bring pencil & notebook. All tools, materials, dichroics, & glass are included. Cost per Student is $85 Twisted Cane Flameworking Workshop One Class, 6 Hours (includes a break for lunch) Ready to get more serious about working with color in your beginning flameworking projects? This workshop will concentrate on showing students how to create cased colors, twisted lattacinos, ribbon cane, and setups for other complex pulled canes. Important skills such as how to strike certain colors in the flame and how to prevent color shifts will also be covered. We will focus on technique rather than product, so you can gain the skills necessary to work more successfully with color in your own projects. | FUSING WORKSHOPS & CLASSES: Many thanks to Morton Glass System for making their Portable Glass Shop cutting system available for each student's use in my studio! Beginning Fusing Workshop One Class, 4 Hours Feel like playing with the glass but want to start with something a little less intimidating? Try your hand at making a simple 8x8 tile AND 4x4 coaster. We will cover glass safety & cutting basics along with applications of colored glass sheets to design a unique set that will be fused and ready for pickup the following week. Cost per Student is $75 Beginning Fused Jewelry Workshop Two Classes, 4 Hrs 1st class, 2 Hrs 2nd class (6 hrs total, 2 weeks) Enjoy your time learning to make ear rings, pendants, and broaches using colorful glass scraps including a few pieces of dichroics & irids. Pieces will be fired during the week, and ready for cleanup & jewelry prepping the second week. Class includes glass, glue, bails, one pot of glass & metal accessory beads, and gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry findings. (Additional findings and accessory beads available at low cost if desired.) No experience required. Cost per Student is $125 Collage Masks Workshop Two Classes, 4 Hrs 1st class, 2 Hrs 2nd class (6 hrs total, 2 weeks) Ready for more fusing fun? Students will experiment with frits & powders, micas & irids, and diamond ring saws to assemble some funky free form art (roughly 7x10 FLAT size) exploring mask themes Clean up will be done during the last class, with various display options discussed. Fusing level I experience is required. Cost per Student is $125 Fused Dichroic Bracelets Class Two Classes, 3 hrs each, (6 hrs, two weeks) OPT Third class (2 hrs) included to change bracelet opening 1X if needed. Love the look of those gorgeous dichroic glass bracelets? Students will learn the ins and outs of creating these beautiful pieces of jewelry. Class includes glass & materials to make TWO dichroic bracelets using one 1x8" strip dichro, with detailed demos and hands on instructions in all phases of the process ~ sizing, creating glass blanks, grinding & shaping, fusing & bending, as well as customizing bracelet openings to each person's needs. The option to create an additional bracelet in class is available for an additional fee of $30. All materials, tools, glass, and safety equipment will be provided. Cost per Student is $150 Sushi Plate & Sauce Bowl Workshop Two Classes, 4 Hrs 1st class, 2 Hrs 2nd class (6 hrs total, 2 weeks) Now try putting all your fusing techniques together in this class to create your own unique 6x8 sushi platter, 3 inch diameter sauce bowl, & chopstick rest. Pieces will be created and fused the first week, then cleaned up (using diamond pads & diamond lap wheel products) & slumped the following week. Cost per Student is $150 Deep Casting ~ Pattern Bar Slab Boxes Two Classes, 6 hrs (4 hrs 1st class, 2 hrs 2nd class) During the first class period learn to setup slab boxes to make deep cast Pattern Bars using color scraps and clear glass. We will also cover how to use fiber molds & mullite dams and create a firing schedule to do a deep casting fusing. During the second class learn to use a tile saw, belt sander & diamond lap wheel to cut up your pattern slab pieces, giving you multiple design elements that you can later use to create more complex pieces of fused glass art. This is a great way to add a new dimension to your fused & cast work while using up your scrap glass! Wear old 100% cotton clothing and bring pen, notebook, readers, snack & drink. Cost per Student is $135 Deep Casting ~ Pattern Bar Bowls Two Classes: 2 Classes 4+ hrs each (8+ hrs total) Make a heavy piece of glass art that is multi-colored and very unique! Students will design a pattern bar slab bowl (10 inch diameter) using multiple colors & layers of glass. Students will set up their piece as a deep cast that will be fired and later slumped into a beautiful bowl. During the second class, we will cover the ins and outs of coldworking with plenty of time for you to work on the diamond lap wheel and other grinding and cutting equipment. Beginning Fusing experience is required. (This class entails 2 firings and more glass.) Cost per Student is $175 Fusing Meets Casting: Pattern Bars, Slab Boxes, Combing, & Vitreograph Five Day Intensive ~ 4+ hrs each day (20+ hrs total) Want to do it all? This class will expand upon the idea of marrying fusing to casting as you work "deep" in your kiln with glass. Students will learn to setup & pull Vitreographic elements; to make slab boxes; to create multi-layered designs using frits, cullet, wire, and pulled stringer; to create intricate pattern bar slabs; to setup a casting using fiber molds and mullite dams; and to successfully execute a deep cast firing in the kiln. Students will also learn to use all of the studio's extensive coldworking equipment (diamond lap wheel, rings saws, tile saw, grinders, and wet belt sander), and how to cleanup and prep their pieces for final slump firings. Students will also help create a class pattern bar and participating in the setup and combing of a pattern bar slab in a hot kiln. Firing schedules wil be given for each process, along w/ plenty of resource pages and notes. All materials, tools, glass, and safety equipment will be provided. | FRIT CASTING WORKSHOPS & CLASSES: Fused Glass Mosaic Workshop One Class, 4 Hours Start with the basic concept of making a fun mosaic by creating your own glass tessare, then learn how to "grout" with glass frits and powders to create a smashing new tile you can frame or add bumper feet to create a trivet. Diamond Ring saws and grinders will be available for use as well. Your 8x8 tile will be fired by the instructor and ready for pickup the following week. All materials, tools, glass, and safety equipment will be provided. Wear 100% cotton clothing, no baggy sleeves. Bring your own reader glasses if needed, and a pen, notebook, snack & drink. Cost per Student is $80 "Painted Line" Workshop One Class, 4 Hours Have fun creating a more painterly type of fused tile using glass powders and frits after laying down a painted line as a reference point on an 8x8 glass blank. Mix in a little dichro and some metal leaf and you have a truly glitzy piece of art! All materials, tools, glass, and safety equipment will be provided. Wear 100% cotton clothing, no baggy sleeves. Cost per Student is $80 "Painting with Light" Frit Casting Workshop Two classes, 4 hours each (8 hrs total, 2 weeks) Now it's time to take all those frit casting & fusing techniques and combine them into a beautiful deep casting to create an 8x8x1/2 inch "thick" tile with depth and perspective. We will be using painted lines, metal wire, frits & powders, metal leaf, dichro, cullet, and stringer to paint a scene that will create dimensional depth as the light shines through it. Your "painting" will be fired during the week; coldworking techniques & mounting systems will be taught during the second class with time given to clean up your tile. | KILN CASTING Open Face Tile Two classes, 6 hrs 1st wk + 2 hrs 2nd wk (8 hours total, 2 weeks) This class will create a 5x5x3/4" glass tile by making a simple bas relief clay tile model. The clay tile will then be used to create a refractory mold that will be filled with soda lime glass using colored frit for detail & clear cullet for background (to be fired during the week between classes). Students will meet the following week to devest their fired molds and learn some basic coldworking skills to cleanup their final glass product. All materials, tools, glass, and safety equipment will be provided. Wear 100% cotton clothing, no baggy sleeves. Bring your own reader glasses if needed, and a pen, notebook, snack & drink. No prerequisites required; continuing students welcome. Cost per Student is $125 Solid Sculpture Three classes, 4 hours each (12 hours total, 3 weeks) Students will create a small basic sculptural work in wax, then learn to form a basic sprue cup, followed by setup for a coddle box pour using refractory materials to create the mold. A crucible will be charged with glass cullet to fill the mold when fired; the mold will be devested during the last class, with simple coldworking techniques covered to cleanup the final piece. Cost per Student is $180 Hollow Vessel (Lost Wax Casting) Four classes, 4 hours each (16 hours total, 4 weeks) Ready for the next step in casting? Students will continue to expand their glass casting skills by learning to make a simple hollow vessel form in wax with basic exterior design elements. We will utilize Lost Wax Casting techniques to learn how to sprue and vent the models, create diverse refractory molds, and set up a crucible melt to fire the mold and fill the vessel with glass inside the kiln. The molds will be devested during the last class with time for coldworking and cleanup of the piece to create a truly unique and luminous vessel. Cost per Student is $240 Carved Core Hollow Vessel Four classes, 4 hours each (16 hours total, 4 weeks) Expand your casting experiences by learning to do carved cores where the design elements are on the inside of your hollow vessel form. Variations on refractory materials for handbuilt firable molds will be discussed. Students will handbuild their own molds, which will then go thru the lost wax process and a crucible firing in the kiln, with the artwork devested and coldworked in the final class. Students will be invited to help with the kiln setup and high heat charging if they would like to be present. All materials, tools, glass, and safety equipment will be provided. PATE DE VERRE CLASSES: Beginning Talc Core Vessel Three Classes: 2 classes 5 hrs each + 1class 2 hrs (12 hrs total, 3 wks) Ever wondered how artists get that cool sugary crystal look in a hollow vessel? Come to this class and explore the exciting possibilities of Pate de Verre. Students will learn to create & test custom glass recipes, then learn to create a refractory mold from a simple bowl shape that will be packed with various frits & glue to form a color design. Molds will be fired by the instructor and ready when students meet for the final class to devest their molds and learn some basic coldworking techniques suitable for this type of pate de verre piece. Continuing Talc Core Vessel w/ Inclusions or Bas Relief Three classes: 2 classes, 5 hrs ea + 1 class, 2 hrs (12 hrs total, 3 wks) Amazed and excited from the first class, but ready for a bit more challenge? Students will continue to expand their skills by testing more glass recipes and creating a vessel mold that incorporates bas relief inclusions as a design element providing dimensional relief on the exterior of a bowl shaped vessel. The final class will be spent coldworking the piece and debriefing the firing. All materials, tools, glass, and safety equipment will be provided. Wear 100% cotton clothing, no baggy sleeves. Bring your own reader glasses if needed, and a pen, notebook, snack & drink. Pate de Verre I is recommended; continuing students are welcome. Cost per Student is $160 2 Part Press Molds with Bas Relief Four classes, 4 hours each (16 hours total, 4 wks) Students will learn to make a 2 part press mold w/ exterior designs in bas relief on their hollow vessel. This process is more complicated and stays in the kiln longer and at higher temps, yielding the rich, traditional alabaster-like surface on these luminous vessels. The final class will be spent devesting the mold and debriefing the firing, as well as learning several coldworking techniques using various pieces of equipment, with time to coldwork your own piece. | Taste of Glass! Introductory Glass & Jewelry Survey 5 days: 4 hrs each day (20 hrs total in 1 wk intensive OR as 5 weeks) Get ready to spark your creativity with the Taste of Glass, featuring kiln casting or kiln forming, fusing, beadmaking, flameworking, coldworking, and jewelry making in this week long sampling of various glass processes! All materials & equipment are provided. No experience required, just bring a pen & sketchbook, and snack & drink, and your sense of fun. This class includes multiple glass processes and the use of tools and equipement and glass from all areas of the studio! Cost per Student is $360 (a $390 value!)
ENCAUSTICS CLASSES The Art of Encuastics & Collage I $240 ~ for 3 four hour sessions More than just an Encaustics Open Studio session ~ finally a Beginning Encaustics class at SAS to teach you how to effectively use the tools & materials needed to create your own luminous encaustic collage paintings. Over the course of three class periods during the month of April, we will cover which substrates & materials work best, when to use torches verses heat guns, how to prepare your own inexpensive encuastic mediums, and how to finish your work. During each class period, I will demo several different techniques & tips used in the exciting art of Encaustics & Collage, and give you plenty of time each class period to create your own art. All boards, encaustic materials, and tools are provided, but please bring a stash of scrap papers for collaging. Also bring pencil & notebook, AND A SACK LUNCH. No experience necessary!
The Art of Encuastics & Collage II $240 ~ for 3 four hour sessions Expand your knowlege base of encaustic painting and collage techniques. We will cover ways to finish your art work and how to frame your encaustic boards (including make your own or buy them), along with more techniques and tips demo-ed during each class session. This is a great opportunity if you are already doing some encaustics & collage, but you need help with your work or need some direction or assistance in executing your ideas. All boards, encaustic materials, and tools are provided, but please bring a stash of scrap papers for collaging. Bring pencil & notebook, AND A SACK LUNCH. PreRequisite: The Art of Encaustics & Collage I or sound experience with using encaustic materials and tools. NOTE: Encaustic & Collage Open Studio time is available by reservation from 2pm - 6pm after each class period at the rate of $15 per hour. Please let me know prior to each class date if you are going to stay for Encaustic Open Studio as there are only 4 slots available in each session. Payment is required at the end of each Open Studio session. See below for dates. |
